2011 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering
“His Heart, His Hands, His Voice,
I am Southern Baptist missions”
Now is the time for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, the Southern Baptist special offering for support of the International Mission Board. The Lottie Moon Offering is 57% of the yearly budget. About 50% of the Cooperative Program offering goes to the IMB; this is 30% of the IMB budget. World Hunger Funds make up 2% of the IMB budget and field generated funds and investment returns make up the remaining 11% of the budget. Each of our SBC churches has the opportunity to share in, support of the work of the IMB.
But over the last few years the support from our churches has begun to drop as the economy has dropped. We need to look at the Commission that was given to our churches of taking the Gospel to the world beginning at home and to the ends of the world. Supporting our mission programs may mean we have to sacrifice more to reach the world.
What can your church give to carry out Christ commands to us. We often forget that what we give to the church is not our money but it is God’s money for us to use to follow his commands to us. What do we give to the Cooperative Program, in 1981 the average amount given by the S.B. Churches was over 11% but now it is around 5%. Our offerings to the Lottie Moon Offering and Annie Armstrong offering have not keep up with needs of the IMB and NAMB. What will your church give to the Lottie Moon Offering? As you consider the gift from your church, consider the chart below that breaks down the needs of the IMB based on the number of missionaries. (The total number of full time missionaries has dropped to below 5,000.)
What is the average cost to support an individual missionary?
• $46,700 a year
• $3,890 a month
• $900 a week
• $128 a day
• $5.30 an hour
• $.09 a minute
(Reported April 2011. Support includes housing, salary, children’s education, medical expenses, retirement and more.)
Pray that as you plan your churches goal and budget for the next year you will seek God’s will for your church and yourself. .
